The upcoming general elections will further improve the country’s stability and its law and order situation, a senior army official said at a press briefing held at Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday.The army, like the general people, also wants free and fair elections to be held in accordance with the government’s roadmap, said Lt General Md Mainur Rahman, general officer commanding of Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC).

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and other key government officials have repeatedly declared that the next parliamentary elections will be held in the first two weeks of February.

The army is looking forward to the elections, which would allow personnel to return to the barracks after 15 months of challenging service, Md Mainur Rahman told reporters.

The 15 months marked a rare period in the country’s history, the army official noted. Despite the army extending critical support in this challenging period, some vested groups have continued spreading ill-motivated, false and fabricated information against the army, he alleged.In spite of all this, the army would continue performing the duty it has been entrusted with, Md Mainur said, noting that the army is now more united than ever before.

During the past 15 months, the army assisted the civil administration and internal security agencies in tackling some unique challenges like the outpour of emotions pent up over 15 years, unprecedented floods in Cumilla and Noakhali as well as repeated road blockades by different groups, the lieutenant general said.
