Bangladesh defender Topu Barman declared his side ready to embrace the challenge of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship, insisting the hosts have set their sights on ending a 23-year wait for the regional crown when the tournament returns to Dhaka in November.

Following Saturday's draw in Thimphu, Bangladesh were placed in Group A alongside Sri Lanka and Bhutan, while Nepal could also join the group if FIFA lifts the country's suspension by 30 September.

Despite the tough draw, the centre back made it clear that Bangladesh's only target is to lift the trophy.

"In tournaments like this, every match counts, from the opening game right through to the final," Topu told Daily Sun on Sunday.

"Our target this time is to become champions. We will approach every match with that mindset and take it one game at a time."

Sri Lanka are expected to pose a sterner test than in previous meetings after reinforcing their squad with several overseas-based footballers. However, the no.4 believes Bangladesh have also evolved significantly under head coach Thomas Dooley.

"To become champions, you have to beat the strong teams. Reaching the final and winning the title will never be easy," he mentioned.

"It is definitely a challenge, but we have improved day by day. We have home advantage, and I have great confidence in this team."

"The confidence we gained after beating San Marino will also play a huge role in this SAFF Championship."

Bangladesh defeated European side San Marino in June, a result that further boosted belief within the squad ahead of the region's biggest football tournament.

Topu is also optimistic that Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury will be available despite the championship beginning before the official FIFA international window.

"I am not sure how the federation is communicating with Hamza or what the situation will be with his club," the 31-year-old told the Daily Sun.

"But those matters should be resolved by August or September. I firmly believe he will play."

"He is very positive about the SAFF Championship and will try his best to join us. He is already a leader in this team, and we need a player like him in a tournament of this magnitude."

This year's championship will mark the fourth time Bangladesh has hosted the SAFF Championship. The hosts lifted their only regional title in Dhaka in 2003 but suffered a disappointing group-stage exit when they last staged the tournament in 2018.

The experienced international revealed that preparations have already begun under Dooley, with the coaching staff maintaining regular communication to ensure every player understands the importance of the assignment.

"The coaches are constantly in touch with us. Everyone knows how important this tournament is," he said.

"There is a great atmosphere within the squad, and we are building a strong bond. We believe we are ready for the challenge."
