A Dhaka court on Monday granted a two-day remand for a French national in a case filed over the recovery of a large amount of undeclared foreign currency at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ehsanul Islam passed the order after a hearing, State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.

Earlier, Investigation Officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Mostafizul Islam of Airport Police Station sought a seven-day remand for the accused.

The remand plea stated that custodial interrogation was necessary to determine the actual source of the recovered money, whether there was any intention to smuggle the funds abroad, where the currencies had been collected from, and whether any organised foreign currency smuggling network was linked to the incident.

According to the case documents, French citizen David Pierre André Delon, 44, was detained and handed over to customs authorities after coming under the scrutiny of law enforcement agencies due to his suspicious behaviour while attempting to leave the country through HSIA on Sunday.

A large amount of foreign currency from different countries was reportedly recovered from his bag during a search, including 298,520 UAE dirhams, 10,660 som, 2,800 euros, USD$1,700, 470 Saudi riyals and 200 Moroccan dirhams.

Under Bangladeshi law, carrying foreign currency beyond the prescribed limit requires mandatory declaration and approval. The accused allegedly failed to comply with these requirements.

A case has been filed with Airport Police Station under the Special Powers Act, 1974, and the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947.
