Prime Minister's Adviser and PMO spokesperson Mahdi Amin on Friday said the government's primary objective under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is to safeguard human rights, the rule of law, and freedom of expression, stressing that the government's authority comes solely from the people.
Speaking at the Bengal Delta Conference 2026, organised by the Dacca Institute of Research and Analytics (DAIRA) at Hotel InterContinental in the capital, Mahdi said the current administration came to power through a free, fair, and credible election.
He alleged that the previous 16 years of authoritarian rule were marked by political repression, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, custodial deaths, and politically motivated cases, with the BNP being the largest victim due to its position as the country's biggest political party.
Mahdi said the current government had adopted a "reset" approach focused on restoring democratic institutions, protecting civil liberties, and empowering citizens.
"We can confidently say that, to the best of our knowledge, there has not been a single incident of enforced disappearance, custodial death, political repression, or human rights violation during the first five months of this government," he said.
The adviser said the government seeks to end the culture of political vengeance while ensuring accountability for those responsible for past human rights violations through due process.
"Our goal is to ensure that no guilty person escapes justice and no innocent citizen is deprived of their freedom in a democratic state," he added.
Mahdi also said the government is committed to promoting inclusive development, empowering women and young people, and implementing reforms outlined in its election manifesto.
He added that each ministry is working toward specific 180-day targets to improve administrative efficiency and deliver on the government's commitments.
