A court in Dinajpur on Tuesday sent to jail a leader of NCP’s youth wing and four others in a case filed over the abduction of a farmer in Dinajpur town.
The court also turned down their bail petitions.
The accused are: Md Arif Moon, 29, assistant organising secretary at Jatiya Jubo Nagorik Shakti’s Rangpur divisional unit, Hasin Ishrak Mim, 22, Azmir Hossain, 22, Sajidul Minhaz, 26, and Hridoy Hossain, 22.
The accused kidnapped a farmer named Abdus Samad in Dinajpur town on Sunday night, and demanded ransom from the family. After the family filed a police complaint, police recovered the victim the next evening, and also detained three accused alongside their microbus.
When transporting the detainees to the Dinajpur Sadar Police Station, a group of NCP activists tried to snatch them from police custody, leading to a tense standoff. Police ultimately managed to contain the situation with support from locals, including regional BNP activists, and also arrested two more NCP-linked activists in the process.
On Monday night, the victim’s son, Md Mamun, 36, filed a lawsuit against all the five detainees and 10-12 other unidentified individuals.
As per the case statement, Abdus Samad was kidnapped from the town’s Gopalganj Pachmail area on Sunday night. Afterwards, the kidnappers called the family asking for Tk12 lakh ransom.
Md Mamun filed a police complaint the very night.
On Monday police launched a drive at Gor-e-Shahid field area in the town and rescued the abductee. At the time, police also detained three of the accused and seized their microbus.
While taking them to the cell at the police station, another group of activists from NCP and allied wings intercepted officers and tried to snatch their comrades.
However, they failed in the process. Police said prior dispute over land-related financial transactions could be a factor in the incident.
