Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed today said Bangladesh and Turkey share common objectives in terms of ensuring justice, protecting human rights, and upholding the rule of law.

“Although Bangladesh and Turkey have distinct historical and cultural backgrounds in their constitutional journeys, both nations share the same goals- ensuring justice, safeguarding human rights, and establishing the rule of law,” he said.

The Chief Justice was addressing a special session marking the 63rd anniversary of Turkey’s Constitutional Court in Istanbul, said a press release here on Friday.

On behalf of Bangladesh’s judiciary, Dr Ahmed greeted the people of Turkey and their constitutional institutions, particularly the Turkish Constitutional Court.

The chief justice said the celebration of the Turkish Constitutional Court’s anniversary is not just a historical event but also a symbolic reaffirmation of the commitment to constitutional ideals and justice.

He stressed that constitutions should be more effective and meaningful in the lives of ordinary citizens, judicial processes must be more accessible, transparent, and inclusive.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s experience, the Chief Justice said, “The country’s higher judiciary has played an active role through issuing suo moto actions and public interest litigation opening a new avenue to protect the rights of the marginalized people.”

In the global context, he pointed out that constitutional courts must adopt a broader perspective to safeguard fundamental rights, particularly in areas like climate justice, digital rights and data protection, artificial intelligence, and cross-border inequalities.

He stressed the need for a justice framework that aligns with national realities while addressing global challenges.
Addressing judicial representatives and legal experts from various countries, the Chief Justice said he is Turkey at a time when Bangladesh’s judiciary is undergoing far-reaching structural reforms.

He expressed confidence that Bangladesh could strengthen judicial relations and cooperation by learning from Turkey’s experience.
