Bangladesh endured a difficult second day at the Asian Games on Sunday, with athletes failing to progress in swimming, shooting, and table tennis across both individual and team events.
At the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, swimmer Mukti Khatun made an expected early exit from the women’s 50m breaststroke. She finished seventh in her heat, clocking 36.61 seconds, which placed her 23rd overall out of the 24 competitors.
The struggles continued at the shooting range, where all three Bangladeshi competitors were eliminated in the women’s 10m air rifle qualifiers. Out of a field of 55 shooters, Shafa Bin Shahed finished 38th with a score of 621. Sajida Haque secured 40th place with 620.6, whilst Mehnaz Sharmin ended in 46th with a score of 619.1.
In table tennis, both the men’s and women’s teams suffered heavy 3-0 defeats in their respective fixtures. The women’s side was outplayed by Chinese Taipei from the start. Sonam Sultana Soma lost her tie to Yeh Yi-tien 11-4, 11-3, 11-2, and Nowrin Mahi was beaten by Cheng I-Ching 11-2, 11-4, 11-1. Tushi Samanta also fell to Peng Yu-Han in straight games, 11-4, 11-2, 11-7.
The men’s team faced a similarly tough outing against Kazakhstan. Hridoy Mohtasin was defeated 11-5, 11-4, 11-4, and Imrul Emon went down 11-4, 11-7, 11-9. Ramhim Lian Bom fought hard in his final game but ultimately lost his match 11-8, 11-5, 13-11.
