The High Court Division of the Supreme Court has disposed of 50,325 old criminal miscellaneous cases in just 11 working days as part of a special initiative to reduce the backlog of cases.

According to a statement from the Supreme Court on Thursday, 14 criminal motion benches of the High Court disposed of another 6,968 old criminal miscellaneous cases during the day, taking the total past the 50,000 mark.

Since the special initiative to clear longstanding cases began, the High Court has disposed of a total of 57,232 old criminal miscellaneous and writ cases.

The initiative is being carried out by the High Court’s criminal motion and writ motion benches following directives from the Chief Justice.

The special drive aims to ensure speedy justice for litigants, reduce the backlog of cases and improve the efficiency of the judicial system.

The judges of the High Court’s criminal and writ motion benches launched the initiative on 7 May, allocating specific days each week to prioritise the disposal of longstanding criminal miscellaneous and writ cases.

The Supreme Court said the initiative to clear old cases will continue.
