The Republic of Kosovo has elected Dr Justina Shiroka-Pula as its new president, according to the Embassy of Kosovo in Dhaka.
Shiroka-Pula, a former minister, distinguished economist and academic, brings extensive experience to the country’s highest office, the embassy said in a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Wednesday (7 October).
She is also the president of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The Embassy of Kosovo in Dhaka congratulated Shiroka-Pula on her election as the President and wished her every success in her new mandate.
It also expressed hope for continued progress and prosperity for Kosovo under her leadership.
However, the presidential election in the Republic of Kosovo has ended a long running political crisis.
The late-night vote narrowly met a deadline whose violation could have triggered Kosovo’s fourth general election in less than two years.
In a carefully negotiated deal with the opposition, Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s government secured the two-thirds majority needed to elect Justina Shiroka Pula as president.
Opposition MPs agreed to back the presidential pick after Kurti approved a law aimed at curbing the powers of a special war crimes court, which sentenced four former Kosovo Liberation Army figures last month.
