Opposition leader meets British high commissioner

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke paid a courtesy call on Opposition Leader and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr Shafiqur Rahman at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday (10 June).

The meeting took place at the Office of the Opposition Leader at around 11am and focused on a range of political, economic and bilateral issues of mutual interest.

British High Commission Political Counselor Timothy Duckett and Second Secretary (Political) Kate Ward attended the meeting on behalf of the UK mission.

According to those present, discussions covered Bangladesh’s political and economic situation following the national elections, the upcoming national budget, prospects for bilateral trade and investment, and various aspects of Bangladesh–UK relations.

The two sides also exchanged views on strengthening parliamentary democracy, development cooperation and migration-related issues.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman was accompanied by his foreign affairs adviser, Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem Arman, and team member Ali Ahmad Mabrur.

Sources said the meeting was held in a warm and cordial atmosphere, reflecting the longstanding and friendly relations between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.

Both sides expressed optimism that the existing partnership and cooperation between the two countries would continue to deepen in the years ahead.
