A Dhaka court has granted bail to Shahriar Mahmud, the prime accused in a case filed over an attack and vandalism at a New Gini Properties project under Cantonment Police Station in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasib Ullah Pias granted him bail on Monday on a Tk10,000 bond, said prosecution division Sub-Inspector Tarekur Rahman on Tuesday.

According to court sources, the defence lawyer filed a bail petition on Monday, citing his old age and illness. After hearing the plea, the court granted him bail.

Shahriar was sent to jail following his arrest on 28 September. On 1 October, the court granted police three days to question him on remand. He was sent back to jail on 7 October after the remand.

According to the case documents, around 50 people allegedly broke into the New Gini Properties Ltd project site in West Matikata on 26 September.

They allegedly opened fire and attacked people with machetes, knives and sticks, vandalised a studio and looted cash, laptops, cameras and other equipment. They also damaged several vehicles.
