Police in the capital’s Kafrul area have arrested two individuals and uncovered the mystery behind a viral CCTV video showing a motorcyclist being seriously injured after being struck by a brick.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Md Parvez, 30, and Anwar Hossain Babu, 32.

According to Kafrul Police Station, the incident took place at around 1:20am on 10 June on the Ibrahimpur are, approximately 100 yards east of the Purba Shewrapara bus stand.

The victim, Rafi, was returning home on a motorcycle when several miscreants allegedly attacked him due to a previous dispute.

Police said the attackers struck Rafi on the right side of his head with a brick, causing severe injuries and knocking him off his motorcycle. The assailants then reportedly took the injured victim away from the scene in an autorickshaw. CCTV footage of the incident later went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention.

Following the incident, Rafi’s uncle, Nur Hossain, filed an attempted murder case with Kafrul Police Station.

During the investigation, police analysed the CCTV footage and identified four suspects allegedly involved in the attack. They were named as Md. Parvez, Md. Faisal alias Kalu, Anwar Hossain Babu and Amin.

As part of the investigation, a police team arrested Parvez on Thursday from an area near the Indian border under Dhobaura Police Station in Mymensingh district using information technology-based tracking. Another team arrested Anwar Hossain Babu from the Ibrahimpur area. Police also recovered the victim’s motorcycle in an abandoned condition from a location near the crime scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Parvez had previously lived as a tenant at the victim’s residence and became acquainted with Rafi during that time. Police said Parvez and his associates were allegedly involved in drug trafficking in the area, which had led to disputes with the victim.

Investigators said an altercation took place between Rafi, Parvez and Kalu on the evening of 9 June, during which the suspects allegedly threatened him. The following night, Parvez, Kalu, Babu and Amin reportedly took positions in the Purba Shewrapara area and waited for Rafi.

When Rafi arrived on his motorcycle, Amin allegedly attempted to stop him. As he continued riding, Parvez allegedly struck him on the head with a brick, causing him to crash onto the road.

Police said the suspects later attempted to mislead people by claiming that a brick had fallen from above and injured the victim. They then transported Rafi in an autorickshaw and abandoned him in the Ibrahimpur area before fleeing.

According to police, Parvez and Kalu have multiple drug-related cases pending against them at various police stations across the Dhaka metropolitan area.

Legal action against the arrested suspects is currently underway.
