The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two suspected muggers in connection with the death of a school headteacher who fell from a moving rickshaw when motorcycle-borne muggers attempted to snatch her handbag near the Parliament building in Dhaka.
The suspects were identified as Md Poni, the alleged main suspect, and his associate, said RAB-2 Deputy Director (Media) Major M Mubin Rahman Tapos on Sunday.
A team of RAB-2 arrested the duo and recovered the motorcycle allegedly used in the incident, he said.
Further details will be disclosed at a press briefing at the RAB-2 headquarters after 4pm, the official added.
The deceased, Ranjina Parveen, 55, was the headteacher of Bagbari Girls Government Primary School in Gabtali, Bogura.
She had travelled to Dhaka with her husband to visit the Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital in Farmgate.
Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, said on Saturday that the couple were travelling by rickshaw towards Farmgate between 5:30am and 6am when two motorcycle riders attempted to pull Parveen’s handbag.
“As they pulled at her bag, she fell from the moving rickshaw and suffered a severe head injury,” the OC said.
The couple took her to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
