National University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ASM Amanullah has stressed the importance of preserving the spirit of the July Uprising, warning that many popular uprisings around the world failed to achieve their intended goals due to internal divisions.
He urged people to set aside differences and work together to establish equality at all levels of society in order to realise the aspirations of the movement.
He made the remarks on Wednesday at a programme organised by the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal, marking the July Uprising Day, where he attended as the chief guest.
Prof Amanullah said the martyrs of the July Uprising remain the greatest source of inspiration for the nation and an enduring symbol of resistance against injustice.
“The young people who sacrificed their lives in the struggle against autocracy and fascism have ushered in a new democratic dawn for Bangladesh. The debt we owe to the martyrs can never be repaid, but standing by their families and preserving their memory is our sacred national responsibility,” he said.
Highlighting the inclusive nature of the movement, he said the uprising succeeded through the united participation of students, teachers, parents, professionals, workers, rickshaw pullers, physicians and people from all walks of life.
He paid special tribute to doctors who provided treatment despite grave risks, the extraordinary courage shown by women, and the contribution of expatriate Bangladeshis, saying their roles would remain etched in history.
Speaking at the event, SAARC secretary general Ambassador Ghulam Sarwar praised the vice-chancellor’s role during the July movement, saying Prof Amanullah had remained active on the streets despite personal risks and had also played a significant intellectual role through the media.
“When there was hardly anyone willing to speak in favour of the July movement on television talk shows, Dr Aman spoke fearlessly and candidly in support of the truth. His courage, sacrifice and leadership against injustice will remain forever remembered by the nation,” he said.
The programme was chaired by Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Md Shafiqul Rahman.
Among others, National University’s Director of Physical Education and Cultural Affairs Mohammad Shafiul Karim, senior embassy officials, members of the diplomatic mission and distinguished members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community attended the event.
