A Dhaka court on Thursday placed three accused on a one-day remand in a fraud case filed with Shahbagh Police Station over an alleged proxy scam involving recruitment to the posts of office assistant at the Ministry of Public Administration.
The three accused are Md Russell Rana Liton, 32, Md Ali Haider, 29, and Md Masud Fakir, 31.
The court also ordered that another accused, Md Alim, be interrogated at the jail gate.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order after Investigation Officer of the case and Sub-Inspector Md Abdul Gaffar of Shahbagh Police Station sought a seven-day remand.
During the hearing, defence lawyers opposed the remand prayer and sought bail for the accused. However, after hearing both sides, the court granted a one-day remand for the three accused and ordered the jail-gate interrogation of Md Alim.
Earlier, on 19 July, the accused were detained at the Secretariat and later handed over to Shahbagh Police Station. They were sent to jail by a court the following day.
The case alleges that the ministry published a recruitment notice on 5 May to fill 20 vacant posts of office assistant (Grade-20). The written examination was held on 19 June, followed by viva voce examinations on 24, 25 and 26 June.
Appointment letters were issued to the successful candidates on 6 July.
The selected candidates were instructed to submit their joining letters on 19 July.
When the accused went to join their posts, officials became suspicious of their appearance after discrepancies were found between their faces and the verified photographs taken during the viva examinations.
The accused allegedly admitted that they had secured the jobs by using proxy candidates in the recruitment examinations in exchange for large sums of money.
