Dinajpur, Bangladesh: Authorities at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) have temporarily suspended 31 students following a violent attack on a fellow student and acts of vandalism inside a residential hall, triggering heightened tension across the campus.
The decision was taken late Thursday night during the 27th meeting of the university’s Discipline and Suspension Board.
According to an official order signed by Registrar (Additional Charge) Prof Dr Md Abu Hasan, more than a hundred students armed with locally made weapons and sticks stormed Shaheed Abrar Fahad Hall around 2:30pm on Thursday and allegedly assaulted student Shahid Noor Hossain.
During the incident, the attackers also vandalised the hall’s prayer room, CCTV cameras and other university property. An assistant proctor and several students sustained injuries in the violence.
University authorities said the accused students were identified through video footage and eyewitness testimony. Acting under Articles 14 and 15 of the university’s student discipline ordinance, the administration ordered the immediate suspension of the 31 students.
Sources within the university said the order was enforced following approval from the vice-chancellor and has already been forwarded to faculty deans, department chairpersons, hall administrations and other relevant offices.
The incident has sparked fear and unrest among students, with tensions continuing to run high on campus.
University officials said additional security measures have been deployed to restore order, while an investigation into the attack remains underway.
