A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered that Rabiul Islam, alias Robin, Disaster Management Secretary of the Dhaka North unit of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, be shown arrested as a suspected accused in a case linked to the July mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order after Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Md Abdul Alim produced the accused before the court and filed a plea to have him shown arrested.

According to the case statement, the victim, Mahbub Hasan Mamun, was shot dead in front of the Mirpur BRTA office on 17 July 2024. His wife, Sahinur, later filed the case, naming 161 accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Police said the preliminary investigation found that Robin was present at the scene with others. They sought his detention, stating that it would facilitate a fair investigation, adding that a remand application might be filed later if further interrogation is required.
