Police have filed a case over the recovery of a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) from beneath the Motijheel Metro Rail Station in the capital.

The case was filed on Saturday by Sub-Inspector (SI) Mirza Mohammad Mukta of Motijheel Police Station against unidentified individuals.

According to the case statement, SI Mukta was on duty as part of the security arrangements for the Ulto Rath Yatra procession. The procession started from Dhakeshwari National Temple and was scheduled to pass through Shapla Chattar in Motijheel before ending at Swamibagh Ashram.

The complaint states that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Control Room received information from the Traffic Division in the evening about a bomb-like object found near the procession route.

Police were informed that the device, placed inside an umbrella, was emitting a flashing light. Following instructions from senior officers, SI Mukta and his colleagues reached the spot beside the generator room of the Motijheel Metro Rail Station at around 6:20pm and cordoned off the area.

As the procession approached, police requested participants to avoid the location, citing a “short circuit” to prevent panic, the case statement said.

After the procession safely passed through Shapla Chattar towards Swamibagh Ashram, members of the DMP Bomb Disposal Unit arrived at the scene and neutralised the device through a controlled explosion.

The case also states that investigators recovered fragments of a GI pipe, a battery and ball bearings from the scene as evidence following the disposal operation.
