State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit said on Wednesday that the energy and mineral resources sector would serve as the backbone of Bangladesh’s ambition to build a trillion-dollar economy.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the spud-in operation of the Kamta-2 gas well in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur.

The state minister stressed the need to reduce dependence on foreign resources and ensure the maximum utilisation of domestic energy resources to support sustainable economic growth.

“Without electricity and energy, industrialisation is not possible,” he said.

Amit said around 570 industrial units across the country are currently awaiting gas connections, leaving investments worth thousands of crores of taka stalled.

“If we can ensure gas supply to these industries, it will create employment opportunities for millions of people and help turn the country’s dream of a trillion-dollar economy into reality.”

He also said the government aims to reach a stage where there will be no gap between energy demand and supply.

“We want to reach a point where there is no disparity between demand and supply. We all have to work towards that goal,” he added.

Among others, Petrobangla Chairman Md Abdul Mannan and Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited Managing Director Md Abdul Jalil Pramanik attended the inauguration ceremony.
