A Dhaka tribunal on Monday sentenced a man, Md Sanaullah, to death for killing his wife by pouring hot water on her over a dowry demand in the capital’s Kamrangirchar area 20 years ago.

Judge Munsi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict and also fined the convict Tk1 lakh.

Public Prosecutor Ershad Alam George confirmed the matter and said Sanaullah was produced before the tribunal during the pronouncement of the verdict and was later sent back to jail with a warrant of sentence.

The tribunal also acquitted nine other accused in the case, as the allegations against them were not proved beyond reasonable doubt.

According to the case statement, Sanaullah allegedly subjected his wife, Rubina, to physical and mental torture at different times over dowry demands after their marriage in 2005.

In May 2006, Sanaullah allegedly beat Rubina and later poured hot water over her body. She later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Rubina’s mother, Rabia Akter, filed a murder case with Kamrangirchar Police Station, accusing Sanaullah and nine others.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet in November 2006. During the trial, the tribunal recorded testimony from nine witnesses.
