There is no divide between science and religious education in Islam, and knowledge is essential for the overall progress of humanity and the Muslim Ummah, said Professor Dr Sharifuddin Mohammed Shaarani, Vice Chancellor (VC) of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM).
He made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest at a seminar on higher education opportunities and prospects in Malaysia at the International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) on Thursday.
IIUC and USIM jointly organised the event.
Dr Shaarani said Muslims could pursue careers in medicine, engineering, law and architecture while gaining in-depth knowledge of the Quran and Hadith.
He said IIUC was working to develop skilled, ethical and enlightened human resources by integrating modern education with Islamic knowledge.
IIUC VC Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Azadi, who chaired the seminar, stressed strengthening student and faculty exchanges, joint research and academic cooperation between the two universities.
The seminar also discussed higher education opportunities at USIM and other Malaysian universities, followed by a question-and-answer session.
Later, IIUC VC Professor Azadi and USIM VC Professor Sharifuddin signed a letter of intent to advance higher education and academic collaboration between the institutions.
