Two Bangladeshi police personnel detained by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Brahmanpara border in Cumilla were released after 15 hours on Friday.
Senior officials of Bangladesh Police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had been in contact with the relevant Indian authorities since Thursday night to secure their release.
The Indian authorities finally handed over the two police personnel to a Bangladeshi delegation at around 1:50pm on Friday.
Brahmanpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Faruk Hossain confirmed the development
The two police personnel are Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Imran Hossain and Constable Rohit Dewan of Brahmanpara Police Station.
Senior officials of police and BGB were present on behalf of Bangladesh during the handover.
According to police sources, a police team conducted an anti-drug operation near border pillar No. 2059 in the Ashabari area of Shashidal Union at around 10:30pm on Thursday.
Sensing the presence of police, a suspected drug dealer attempted to flee. Constable Rohit Dewan chased the suspect and inadvertently crossed the border into Indian territory.
Local residents in India subsequently detained him and handed him over to the BSF.
After learning about the incident, ASI Imran Hossain went to secure his colleague’s release but was also detained.
Following their detention, senior officials of Bangladesh Police and BGB began communicating with the relevant Indian authorities to bring the two personnel back home.
OC Md Faruk Hossain said discussions over their return had been underway since Thursday night.
“Finally, Imran Hossain and Rohit Dewan were handed over to us at around 1:50pm,” he said.
