The political satire film The University of Chankharpul drew an enthusiastic audience response on its opening day on Friday, as viewers filled theatres despite rain and unsettled weather conditions.
Audiences attended screenings at Star Cineplex (Bashundhara City, Panthapath) and Lion Cinemas in Keraniganj, with university students forming a large share of viewers alongside professionals and families, according to a press release.
Following afternoon shows, the director, executive producer and cast members interacted with audiences, who praised the film for its bold political commentary, satirical tone and portrayal of contemporary social realities. Viewers said the film captures familiar aspects of university life, including hall culture, guest-room practices, campus power dynamics, “Big Brother” influence and the struggles of young people.
Several audience members praised the film’s courage in portraying sensitive political themes. One viewer said, “I did not see much promotion for the film, but after watching it, I am truly impressed.” Another said, “Considering how openly the film exposes the realities of political leadership, I am amazed it received censor board approval.”
Director Akash Haque and executive producer Md Hafizuddin Munna said they plan to organise special screenings at about 50 universities across Bangladesh after the theatrical run. They said they aim to make the film accessible to students at low cost with support from corporate sponsors and cultural organisations.
They said, “The University of Chankharpul is a story about young people, university life and the times we live in. We want students across the country to watch it easily and affordably.”
Canada-based poet and filmmaker Roksana Lais praised the production team for its teamwork and creativity, saying she had not watched a Bangladeshi film in a cinema hall for a long time and felt impressed by the film’s sincerity and courage despite its limited budget.
Writer and film critic Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Sajal also commended the film, saying it successfully explores university life, youth politics and social realities that remain underrepresented in Bangladeshi cinema. He praised the use of a fresh cast, technical execution and cinematography, and called for greater audience support for locally rooted storytelling.
Inspired by Rono Anowar’s short story Jhora Patar Dukkho Bilash, the film explores campus politics, hall culture, power structures and the aspirations and frustrations of students. It has already received recognition including the FIPRESCI Award in the Bangladesh Panorama section at the Dhaka International Film Festival, along with the Hiralal Sen Medal and Best Screenplay Award at the Amar Bhashar Chalachitra Utsab.
The film stars Debdyuti Aich, Rocky Khan and Bobby Biswas, along with an ensemble of emerging actors. Its songs “Shohomot Bhai” and “Rajnitir Moydan” have also gained traction on social media.
The University of Chankharpul continues screening at Star Cineplex and Lion Cinemas.
