The authorities at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) have imposed Section 144 on the campus following rival protest programmes announced by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.
The university’s Additional Registrar and Proctor, Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman, confirmed the development on Tuesday (4 August 2026).
He said the restrictions have been imposed to maintain peace and order on the campus, prohibiting processions, public meetings and rallies until further notice.
However, he added that regular academic activities, including classes and examinations, would continue as scheduled.
Earlier, the two student organisations had announced separate protest programmes. Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Rangpur city unit declared a protest procession and rally from Lalbagh Square to Abu Sayeed Square at 5:30pm.
Meanwhile, the Rangpur city unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal announced a protest march and rally at Park Mor adjacent to Abu Sayeed Square at 4:00pm. The organisation’s Member Secretary, Robiul Islam Robi, called on party activists to join the programme at the designated time.
The restrictions come a day after repeated clashes erupted between activists of the two student organisations over a banner displayed at an exhibition titled “July Against Oppression” on the university’s Swadhinata Memorial Ground on Monday.
The confrontations involved brick-throwing, chairs being hurled and running battles between the rival groups, leaving several people from both sides injured.
