Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has intensified its crackdown on extortion, arresting 41 identified extortionists in raids across the capital over the past four days.
The DMP said on Tuesday morning that the operations were conducted based on specific complaints of extortion and surveillance of the activities of those allegedly involved.
Legal action has been taken against the arrested individuals at the respective police stations, it said.
Police have stepped up operations to maintain law and order amid growing complaints of extortion in different parts of the capital. Surveillance has been particularly strengthened around businesses, transport facilities and crowded areas.The DMP said its operations against extortion and other crimes would continue. It added that necessary measures were being taken to identify and bring offenders to justice while ensuring the safety of city residents.
