Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO spokesperson Mahdi Amin has said that one of the key aspirations of the July mass uprising was to establish an independent, sovereign and democratic Bangladesh, underpinned by a foreign policy that prioritises national interests and rejects subservience.
In a social media post on Thursday, Mahdi said the movement envisioned a state where bilateral and multilateral relations would be built on the principles of equality and fairness, with Bangladesh’s interests placed above all else.
He said the country’s goal is to secure a respected position on the global stage as a sovereign nation guided by dignity and self-respect.
Referring to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ strong reaction to India allowing “a fugitive convicted fascist leader” to deliver a speech from New Delhi, the adviser said the ministry’s response reflected the values of a sovereign and dignified Bangladesh.
Mahdi said the government’s foreign policy continues to uphold the tradition of safeguarding national sovereignty established by the late President Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
He added that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s policy of “Bangladesh First,” the country is moving forward toward becoming a self-reliant, prosperous and internationally respected nation.
