Bangladesh and The Gambia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, commerce, ICT, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and other areas.

The understanding came during a meeting between State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam and Non-resident High Commissioner of The Gambia to Bangladesh Mustapha Jawara at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, said a press release.

The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and growing cooperation between the two countries.

The state minister appreciated the Gambian government for filing and actively pursuing a genocide case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) under the auspices of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

She said successful completion of the case would boost the confidence of the Rohingya people to return voluntarily to their homeland.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with their engagement at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and its affiliated bodies, the OIC, the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement.

The state minister urged the high commissioner to take appropriate measures to enhance cooperation in trade, commerce, ICT, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, jute and jute goods, light engineering, shipbuilding and people-to-people contacts.

She also underscored the importance of exchanging high-level business delegations between the two countries to boost bilateral trade and investment.

The Gambian envoy appreciated Bangladeshi ICT experts for their role in implementing digital public service infrastructure in The Gambia.

He also requested the early conclusion of an instrument on political consultations between the two countries.
