The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested Md Shahadat Hossain, an alleged key ringleader of a Cambodia-based human trafficking network, during a raid in the capital’s Agargaon area.
The arrest was made at around 7:45pm on Wednesday (29 July), according to DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi.
He said Shahadat is a named accused in a case filed with Airport Police Station under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act and the Prevention of Smuggling of Migrants Act.
Preliminary investigation found that Shahadat was one of the principal organisers of a human trafficking syndicate operating in Cambodia.
He had allegedly been involved for a long time in luring people with promises of overseas jobs before trafficking them to the Southeast Asian country.
The CTTC said the investigation is continuing to gather further information and identify other members of the trafficking network.
Legal proceedings against the arrested suspect are currently underway, the unit added.
