Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir said the Directorate of National Consumer Right Protection (DNCRP) will be further strengthened to ensure safe, pure and quality products for consumers.

“Ensuring that people do not have to spend their hard-earned money on adulterated, substandard or harmful products is an important responsibility of the state,” he said while speaking at an exchange meeting with DNCRP officials at the directorate’s conference room on Thursday (17 September).

He said the DNCRP plays a crucial role in protecting the rights of the country’s 170-180 million people.

“Training, manpower, modern equipment and the use of technology will be increased to make the directorate more modern and effective,” he said, adding that its existing services would gradually be brought under digital platforms.

Muktadir said the government would commission the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) to study the structures, manpower and service activities of consumer protection agencies in different countries.

The directorate’s activities would be expanded and made more consumer-friendly based on the study’s recommendations, he said.

“Several new initiatives will be taken soon so that consumers can access the directorate’s services easily and effectively,” the minister added.

Commerce Ministry Secretary Md Ataur Rahman Khan attended the meeting as a special guest, while DNCRP Director General Md Zahirul Islam chaired it.

Export Promotion Bureau Vice-Chairman Mohammad Hasan Arif was also present.

The meeting discussed the DNCRP’s current activities, use of technology, manpower structure, future plans and measures to make consumer services more accessible and effective.
