A Dhaka court on Friday placed four people, including two Chinese nationals, on a three-day remand in a case over the alleged embezzlement of around Tk11 crore through an online investment scam promising attractive returns.
The accused are Ruhul Amin Biswas, 26, Sheikh Sanjida Mansur Sithi, 23, and Chinese nationals Chan Long Ji, 36, and Wang Xiowei, 35.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order after a hearing, Sub-Inspector Mohin Uddin of the prosecution department said.
Earlier, Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Mrityunjoy Pandit Mithun, the investigating officer, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
In the remand petition, the investigator said the accused needed to be questioned to recover passwords for digital devices allegedly used in the fraud, examine bank transactions, trace the flow of money, recover the embezzled funds and arrest their absconding associates.
Police arrested the four on 22 October during raids in Adabor and the Bashundhara residential area of Dhaka.
According to the case statement, the complainant, Md Abu Sadek, was approached through WhatsApp and offered an opportunity to invest in the online stock market for attractive returns.
The complaint alleges that between 25 September 2025 and 26 January 2026, he transferred a total of Tk11 crore to several bank accounts provided by the accused. They allegedly paid him Tk10 lakh in profits to gain his trust.
However, when he later tried to withdraw his investment and profits, he could no longer contact the people involved. Realising that he had allegedly been defrauded, he filed a case with police on 5 May 2026.
