Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has warned of strict action against those responsible for the deaths of six newborns at Ad-din Medical College Hospital in the capital’s Maghbazar area.
Coming down hard on the hospital authorities, the minister said the incident occurred due to their negligence, and a probe committee has already been formed to investigate the matter.
“Appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible based on the investigation report,” Sakhawat told reporters after inspecting Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital in Kishoreganj on Wednesday.
He said six innocent lives were lost due to mismanagement and irresponsibility at the hospital (Ad-din), calling the incident deeply tragic. The government will not tolerate any negligence in this regard, he added.
In response to another question from journalists, he said widespread irregularities and looting in the health sector during the previous government’s tenure have had lasting effects on the country’s healthcare system.
The minister said hospitals are facing shortages of manpower, mismanagement and weak healthcare services, causing suffering for ordinary people.
He also attributed the rise in the spread of various infectious diseases, including measles, to long-standing mismanagement in the health sector.
