A Dhaka court on Sunday set 21 July for passing an order on whether charges will be framed against former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman in a graft case.
Judge BM Tarikul Kabir of the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge’s Court fixed the date for passing the order after concluding the hearing on charge framing, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam.
According to court sources, Matiur, who is currently in jail, was produced before the court. His counsels, Anwar Zahid Bhuiyan and Md Borhan Uddin, sought his discharge from the case, while the ACC prosecutor argued in favour of framing charges.
On 15 Dec 2024, the ACC filed two cases against Matiur and his second wife over allegations of amassing illegal wealth and concealing asset information.
The ACC approved the charge sheet against Matiur on 3 February after completing the investigation. The charge sheet alleged that the accused concealed assets worth Tk1.24 crore by providing false and baseless information in his asset statement.
It also alleged that he accumulated assets worth Tk5.40 crore beyond his known sources of income in his own name by abusing his position as a public servant and through bribery and corruption.
Matiur came under public scrutiny ahead of Eid-ul-Azha in 2023 after it went viral on social media that his son, Mushfiqur Rahman, had bought a goat for Tk15 lakh.
Matiur was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on 14 Jan 2025 and has remained in jail since then.
