Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed police to release a schoolteacher and ensure his safe return home after the teacher allegedly made derogatory and objectionable remarks about him in a classroom in Daulatpur, Kushtia, according to a Facebook post by PM’s Adviser and PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin on Thursday.
The remarks triggered tension among local students, guardians and residents, who staged a protest on the school premises. Police subsequently detained the teacher and took him to the police station, Mahdi Amin said.
After learning about the incident, the prime minister became upset and instructed the concerned police station to release the teacher with respect and ensure his safe return home.
Police subsequently took the teacher safely to his residence following the prime minister’s directive.
According to the post, the prime minister believes that differences of opinion may exist and that every person has the right to hold their own views and opinions. Even when one disagrees with someone’s opinion, their right to express it should be respected.
Respect for differing opinions and freedom of expression is the strength of democracy, the prime minister believes.
He also believes that a culture of positive behaviour, mutual respect and coexistence will strengthen society.
