Residents of Chattogram continued to suffer widespread disruption for a second consecutive day on Wednesday as persistent rainfall left large parts of the city submerged, inundating roads, homes, educational institutions and commercial establishments.

Although rainfall eased somewhat during the day, water remained stagnant in many low-lying areas, including Chawkbazar, Katalganj, Agrabad, Halishahar, Chandgaon, Mohra and Kuaish. Roads, alleys, the ground floors of residential buildings and shops were still under water.

Floodwater also entered the ground floors of schools, colleges, madrasas, hospitals and other public and private facilities.

Outside the city, low-lying areas in almost all upazilas, including Hathazari, Raozan, Satkania, Sitakunda, Rangunia and Boalkhali, were inundated following continuous rainfall.

In some areas, sections of the highway and the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar railway line were submerged. The journey of the Cox’s Bazar Express, which had been stranded at Sholoshahar, was cancelled due to the flooding.

The Chattogram Education Board suspended Wednesday’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations. Several schools and colleges, as well as Chittagong University, also postponed examinations and classes because of the adverse weather.

According to the Patenga Meteorological Office, 237.5 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours until 9:00am on Wednesday. The previous 24-hour period saw 412.3 millimetres of rainfall, the highest recorded in Chattogram in 43 years.
