Popular West Bengal actress Madhumita Sarcar is finally set to make her big-screen debut in Bangladesh with the upcoming film “Gulshaner Chameli”, ending years of speculation about her working in the country’s film industry.
Directed by Mohammad Iqbal, the film is expected to feature Madhumita in a pivotal role. While the producers have yet to make an official announcement, the actress confirmed her involvement while talking to a Bangladeshi media outlet.
Expressing her excitement, Madhumita said, “I’m very excited about this project. For many years, I was supposed to come to Bangladesh for different works, but for various reasons it never happened. Finally, that wish is coming true. I’ll be there soon.”
She revealed that she signed the contract for the film a few days ago and was drawn to the project after reading its story and learning more about her character.
Madhumita rose to fame across both West Bengal and Bangladesh with her portrayal of “Pakhi” in the hit television serial “Bojhe Na Se Bojhe Na”. She has since built a successful career with notable works including “Care Kori Na” and “Chini”, earning a loyal fan base on both sides of the border.
Although this will mark her first appearance in a Bangladeshi feature film, she is no stranger to audiences in the country. In 2016, she starred in the television drama “Meghbalika”, which aired on NTV and received positive responses from viewers.
According to sources, “Gulshaner Chameli” explores the dark realities of politics, abuse of power and elite society. The story centres on a sex worker who becomes an innocent victim of systemic oppression despite committing no crime.
Director Mohammad Iqbal has described the project as a women-centric film with no conventional male hero. Instead, the narrative revolves entirely around its female protagonist, whose character also embodies shades of villainy at different points in the story.
When asked about Madhumita’s casting, Iqbal remained tight-lipped, saying, “I do not want to comment on this right now. Everything will be officially announced in a few days.”
