Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday joined a discussion organised by the Ministry of Education at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital to mark World Teachers’ Day 2026.

For the first time, 100 teachers selected from different categories of education, from primary to higher education, are being honoured with the ‘Guni Shikkhok Sammanona’ (Distinguished Teachers’ Award) on the occasion.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to hand over the awards to the teachers at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium this afternoon.

Each awardee will receive Tk2 lakh in cash, a crest and a certificate of recognition.

The number of recipients of the national teachers’ award has been increased to 100 from 12 this year to enhance the social status and professional recognition of distinguished teachers.

The awardees were selected from educational institutions at the primary and secondary levels, including schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutions, as well as universities.

Of the 100 awardees, 10 are from the primary level, 20 from the secondary level, 25 from colleges, 20 from general universities, 10 from medical colleges, three from agricultural universities, three from engineering universities, four from science and technology and other specialised universities, and five under the Prime Minister’s special quota.

World Teachers’ Day is observed globally on 5 October every year to highlight the importance of teachers’ dignity, rights and professional development, as well as the need to ensure quality education.
