President urges EC to uphold image, public trust

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday urged the Election Commission (EC) to uphold its image and public trust by ensuring that all upcoming elections are held in a free, fair and impartial manner.

He made the call when a four-member EC delegation, led by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban in Dhaka this noon.

The other members of the delegation were election commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Md Anwarul Islam Sarker and Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah.

During the meeting, the president stressed the need to institutionalise and strengthen democracy, urging the EC to perform its responsibilities with impartiality, integrity and accountability.

The chief election commissioner congratulated the president on assuming office and briefed him on the overall activities of the commission, including preparations for the Union Parishad (UP) and municipality elections, NID correction services, NID services for Bangladeshis living abroad and progress on various other issues.

President Mirza Fakhrul thanked the EC for conducting the 13th parliamentary election in a free and impartial manner.

He called upon the commission to ensure that all future elections, including local government polls, are held in a free, fair and impartial manner under its leadership.

The president also assured the EC of his continued cooperation in this regard.

Secretaries concerned of the President’s Office were present at the meeting.
