The Habiganj district administration has imposed Section 144 across the municipal area to prevent any untoward incidents amid rival political programmes announced by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the National Citizen Party (NCP).

The gathering of four or more people, as well as processions, rallies and public meetings has been prohibited at designated locations within the municipal area until further notice, according to the order issued on Wednesday (29 July).

Habiganj Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Moinul Haque confirmed the development.

According to the district administration, the restrictions were imposed to ensure public safety in light of recent clashes and the prevailing law and order situation. Additional police have been deployed at key points across the town to enforce the order.

The move follows an attack on a convoy carrying senior NCP leaders in Habiganj on Tuesday evening. In protest, the NCP announced a demonstration, while the BNP also scheduled a programme at the same time, raising fears of possible confrontation.

Authorities said the restrictions were imposed to maintain law and order and avert any potential violence.
