The Trump administration has temporarily suspended or rescheduled visa interviews for applicants at US embassies and consulates worldwide. The US State Department said the decision was made as part of the launch of a new global training programme.

A State Department spokesperson said on Tuesday (25 August) that new training for consular officers had begun at US embassies and consulates around the world. As a result, schedules for visa interviews are being changed.

According to the State Department, the training will enhance visa officers’ ability to conduct more thorough and consistent assessments of applicants. Particular emphasis is being placed on identifying applicants who may become dependent on government assistance in the future.

Many applicants who already had interview appointments scheduled have been notified by email that their appointments are being rescheduled. They will be informed of new dates and times later.

Since returning to the presidency for a second term, Donald Trump has significantly tightened US immigration policies. Measures have included visa and residency permit cancellations, rejection of applications, and scrutiny of some applicants’ political views and social media activity.

The administration says the measures are primarily aimed at strengthening national security.
