The death toll from a fire at TupTup Resort in Inani, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, rose to 10 on Saturday after a blaze broke out at the resort near Patwartek beach along Marine Drive at around 7am.

Several other people were injured and are receiving treatment at hospitals. The fire was brought under control at around 10am.

Fire Service senior official Dolon Acharya confirmed that 10 bodies had been recovered from the scene. He said four bodies were found inside the resort’s toilets.

They were believed to have poured water inside the toilets in an attempt to save themselves from the fire, he said.

The deceased were identified as Israt Jahan Maliha, 30, Milita Mehezabin Alvi, 23, Laila Jahan Nabila, 27, and Nafista Mim, 27, from Dhaka’s Banasree and Khilgaon areas; Fariha Kabir, 33, and five-year-old Faizan Ahmed from Chuadanga; and Nasrin Akter Mukta, 29, wife of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal vice-president Dewan Faisal.

The identities of the remaining three victims could not be confirmed.
