A Dhaka court on Thursday sent former Gazipur-5 lawmaker Akhteruzzaman to jail after the completion of his remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order following a petition by police, said defence lawyer Morshed Hossain Shahin.

He said, “We applied for his bail and division in jail. The court later sent him to jail, granting him division as per the Jail Code.”

Earlier, on 5 August, Akhteruzzaman was arrested from a house in Gulshan by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The accused was placed on a three-day remand on 10 August.

According to the case documents, on the morning of 18 June, 35–40 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League brought out a procession in the Mohakhali Bus Terminal area.

They allegedly chanted anti-government slogans and carried out various anti-state activities, including exploding cocktails and creating panic among people.

Police later filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the incident.
