A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Jubo League leader Abdus Sobhan Kazi on a five-day remand in a murder case filed with Uttara West Police Station over the July mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order after hearing a remand plea. Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Detective Branch (Wari Division) Inspector (Unarmed) Mrityunjoy Pandit Mithun, sought a seven-day remand for the accused.

According to the case statement, on 19 July 2024, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, an attack and firing allegedly took place on a peaceful programme of students and the public in the Uttara West Police Station area. Al Amin Khalifa was killed and several others were injured in the incident. Following a court order, a regular case was filed with Uttara West Police Station.

The investigation officer said the accused disclosed some information about the incident and about several absconding accused during preliminary questioning. However, no arrests could be made as he failed to provide their full identities. The officer also said custodial interrogation is necessary to verify the accused’s full identity and address and to identify and arrest the other absconding and unidentified accused in the case.

Earlier, on the night of 4 August, Abdus Sobhan Kazi was arrested during a raid from a flat in the Swarnalata Building adjacent to the Banani Police Station Officers’ Mess. During the arrest and raid, police seized a Toyota Harrier vehicle, two iPhones and five Bangladeshi passports issued in his name.
