A Dhaka court on Monday ordered that Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed, alias Shahed Karim, be shown arrested in two loan default cases filed by NRB Bank.

Judge Md Mosharaf Hossain of the Dhaka Artha Rin Adalat passed the orders, said Shahed’s lawyer, Dabur Uddin.

He said, “We applied for his bail in the cases. However, the court ordered that he be shown arrested in the cases for failing to deposit 25% of the claimed defaulted loan amount. We will file an appeal against the orders.”

According to the case documents, Shahed, in the name of Regent Hospital, took out a loan of Tk1.51 crore in 2014. In addition, he obtained Tk5.55 lakh through credit card facilities in his own name. NRB Bank filed two cases after he failed to repay the loans.

Earlier, on 20 July, police arrested him in the capital’s ECB Chattar area. He was later handed over to Pallabi Police Station following its requisition and was subsequently sent to jail.

Shahed, who is also the chairman of Regent Hospital, drew nationwide attention in 2020 over a widely publicised scandal during the COVID-19 pandemic involving the issuance of fake COVID-19 test reports.
