The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday appealed to the Appellate Division seeking the death penalty for former minister Hasanul Haque Inu, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 Mass Uprising.

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed that the appeal was filed with the concerned wing of the Appellate Division on Monday morning.

The prosecution is scheduled to hold a press briefing later in the day over the appeal.

The ICT-2 on June 30, 2026, convicted Inu and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment for crimes against humanity in connection with the killings of six people in Kushtia during the July-August 2024 Mass Uprising.

The tribunal sentenced the former information minister to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment under charge No. 3, 10 years’ imprisonment and a Tk1 lakh fine under charge No. 6, and another 10 years’ imprisonment and a Tk1 lakh fine under charge No. 7.

The fines under charges No. 6 and 7 were ordered to be paid to the victims as compensation.

However, all three prison terms will run concurrently, meaning Inu will serve a total of 10 years in prison, according to the verdict.

The prosecution had earlier said it was dissatisfied with the ICT-2 verdict and would seek enhanced punishment for the three charges on which Inu was convicted, while also challenging his acquittal on the remaining charges.
