Five children drowned in the Padma River in Debinagar Union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila on Friday.
The incident occurred around 1:30pm in Char Chakla area of the union. The children reportedly went to the river to bathe.
Officer-in-Charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station, Ekramul Haque, confirmed the incident.
The deceased were identified as Sumaiya, 10, and Abiba, 8, daughters of Masud; Sharifa, 12, daughter of Shariful; and Shumaiya, 12, and Suraiya, 9, daughters of Nezamuddin, all from Debinagar Union.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Jibon Chandra Das, in-charge of the river police outpost, said river police personnel were at the scene and further details would be available later.
